"The pandemic, the rise of the right, the war against truth: Jon Spencer has a lot on his mind. So how come his new album is so much fun?"
There's very little outright raging on the record though…
It was impossible to make this record without having the pandemic influence. There were some personal things going on with my family, periods of stress and turmoil and worry, on top of and alongside a global pandemic. It wasn't just me. Other people in the band experienced tragedy. But it was a time to write about it in a way that people would not get turned off: "I don't wanna hear about it. I just lived through it."

Oh no, it's really the case—certainly for me. When I started Pussy Galore in '85, '86 Einstürzende Neubauten was a huge influence. Bands and groups like Einstürzende Neubauten, Test Department, Swans, SBK. Even people like Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle. Industrial music, but the bands that were banging on and using trash—society's throwaways."

"Coomes also provided second vocals (not backing vocals) alongside Spencer, with thoughtfully arranged interplay often sending my head bouncing back and forth as if I were watching Djokovic edge Nadal. Weiss took her turn providing supporting vocals during a cover of Pussy Galore's "NYC:1999!," creating one of the night's highlights. Bert, however, was the wildcard and always a highpoint. Although supplied with a traditional kick drum and snare, it was the assortment of junkyard parts that demanded attention. With a hammer in each hand, he pounded out complementary and clattering rhythms on car springs, gas tanks, exhaust pipes, and more, bringing the band's dirty roadhouse rock & roll even deeper into the mud."

"You get the sense from listening to these songs that this band is about the sum of its parts. Is songwriting really collaborative?
Russell: Yes, great question. Jilly and I are the primary songwriters. I'll write the basic music for most of an entire song, usually on guitar to start with, and then add ideas for drum parts and other instruments. I'll then play it for Jilly – we specifically put aside time for that. Then Jilly, usually pretty quickly, comes up with a vocal idea and lyrics from what I play her. She'll then make suggestions for tweaks to the music and help structure the song. It all happens very organically. We are very much each other's muses and I treasure this process. I'm writing all the time and she's right there with me coming up with her parts, apparently as effortlessly and prolifically."

Jon Spencer, Jon Spencer & the HITmakersIn Pussy Galore, we covered Exile in its entirety because Sonic Youth had joked in interviews about doing the Beatles' White Album. I hadn't actually heard the Stones' original then. Neil Hagerty would play us the songs on his guitar – then as soon as we could play it, it was a take. The original has the same shagginess. Turd on the Run is raw rockabilly-blues, a pretty nasty song about a love affair gone wrong, and seems almost omnisexual or pansexual. In 1972 people just didn't write songs like that. It's punk rock."
